IRAN – EXECUTION – SEMNAN
Washington, 6 September (IranVNC)—A convicted drug trafficker was hanged in a prison in Iran’s central Semnan Province, E’temaad Newspaper reported today.
According to the report, the man, identified as Mohammad-Hossein B., was convicted two years ago for trafficking over one kilogram [about 2.4 pounds] of crack.
He was previously sentenced to 25 years jail for possession of 115 kilos of opium, but escaped two years ago during a transfer from Mashhad to Torbat-e Jam in northeastern Iran, the daily reported.
Iran has executed at least 183 individuals this year, AFP reports.
According to Amnesty International, 317 executions were carried out in Iran last year, placing the country second only to China.
Drug trafficking, murder, rape and adultery are among the crimes punishable by death in the Islamic Republic.
