RUSSIA – BUSHEHR – IRAN – NUCLEAR
Washington, 5 September (IranVNC)—The head of Russia’s nuclear energy firm, Atomstroyexport, has told the Russian news agency Vesti that work on the Bushehr power plant in southern Iran would increase next month, Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency reported today.
According to ISNA, Leonid Reznikov said that work on the 1,000-megawatt power plant would accelerate next month as the weather in the southern port city of Bushehr cools, allowing the personnel to work longer hours.
Temperatures during the summer months reach 50 degrees Celsius [122 degrees Fahrenheit], causing the personnel to stop their work at 2 p.m. local time, ISNA reports Reznikov as saying.
Reznikov did not put forward a completion date for the plant, which has been hit with numerous delays.
On Monday, Reznikov arrived in Iran to hold talks with Iranian officials about the project’s completion date. His team visited Bushehr to review the plant’s progress.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Wednesday that a fuel supply accord for the power plant will be finalized by the end of the current Iranian year [20 March 2009] and that the plant will go online next year, the official IRNA news agency reported.
The head of Russia’s Federal Atomic Energy Agency [FAAE], Sergei Kiriyenko, said earlier in the spring that Bushehr plant should be operational by this fall, ISNA reports.
