Washington, 14 June (IranVNC)—A White House spokesperson today described Tehran’s record on human rights as “shameful” and called for the immediate release of six detained Baha’i community leaders.

“The Iranian regime’s human rights record is shameful. A month ago today, the regime arrested six Bahai leaders solely on the grounds of their religion,” said White House spokesperson Gordon Jondroe.

“They should be released immediately,” he announced in a statement released today, adding: “Iran should uphold the basic human right to practice religion and should end its persecution of the Bahai community".

Jondroe is traveling with President George W. Bush in Paris.

On 14 May, officers of Iran’s Intelligence Ministry arrested the six leaders and transferred them to Tehran’s Evin prison, where they remain in detention.

Iran has said the six individuals were arrested on charges of “acting against the interest of the country”.

The group’s seventh member has been in custody in the northeastern city of Mashhad since March 5.
